Who has the best Pho in Lost Angeless?  I'm willing to travel. I don't care if it is shishi or a hole-n-tha-wall.

hmmm... this is though.  i'm partial to abpho (absolutely phobulous) on la cieniga b/c they deliver but they are NOT the best. there's pho cafe off sunset in the silverlake area, and a couple on broadway in chinatown that are worth checking out. In fact, the one that i'm thinking of is called Broadway (or so i think.)

Hanoi Cafe has amazing Pho but moved from their Sawtelle location a few months ago to somewhere in West LA. Noodle Planet & Mr Noodle in Westwood also have good Pho.

My brothers like these places, as do I:

Pho 79 is not bad.

Pho Hanh in Temple City.

Pho King in Rosemead.

My brothers spent 12 and 14 years in Saigon eating pho, so I think they know.

Absolutely Phobulous commits the cardinal sin of actually descreasing the noodles so as to decrease the carbs, etc.

I love Pho 87 on Broadway by China town. It's a true holeinthewall. cheap and filling. parking in the back behind a place that sells sewing machines.

I totally agree with Susan S.  I live in little saigon and thought there's no way any pho place could taste better, but golden deli, the best! (only drawback has to be, no Pho ga` ).

I've been to the Westwood Noodle Planet, the Santa Ana mall Pho place (I forget the place as its been YEARS since I've been there), the Pho Hana in Torrance, Lien's Kitchen in Torrance, Pho Hong Long in Torrance, this hole in the wall pho place on Prairie Ave. which is exceedingly dirty but I forget the name of it, Bamboo Song in Palos Verdes, Mrs. Saigon Cafe in Torrance, Pacific Noodle in Carson, Saigon Flavor in Torrance, and the Pho Place on Carson and Western I used to work at...

Out of all of these I'd say my favorite is Pacific Noodle in Carson. SO good. My mom (who's Viet) keeps raving about this place all the time.

Melissa, see the Pho SF thread: http://www.yelp.com/to...

Northern Vietnamese Hanoi-style pho tends to be more delicate and less spicier, with less star anise and no herbs (horror to my Southern ears!!!). Southern-style tends to have more spices, such as star anice. In either case, the broth should be clear and not too sweet (a sign of MSG, referred to as "sweet powder" in Vietnamese). Broth to noodles (which should not be in a clump) should be 4 to 1. You should get lime wedges, not lemon, in addition to the basil, bean sprouts (ask for them to be pre-boiled like my mom does to avoid e. coli), jalapeno slices, rau ram (only available at Ngoc Mai on Hyde St), mint (also only available at Ngoc Mai), saw leaf herb (sold in local markets, but only the pho joints in the greater LA area offer it with pho), and various other rau leafs (not leaves in this case, I'm well aware of the plural for leaf, thank you) only available in Viet Nam. Turtle Tower, being Northern-style, offers no herbs, but an otherwise decent pho as Monkey S suggested.

Pho'? (this is the V-ASCII method of writing Vietnamese with correct diacritical tonal marks, blame the French for the world's worst orthography, it's actually proven amazing at boosting literary rates, however), is pronounced like fuck without the CK or fuh, as in rhymes with huh, and the proper tone should be like asking a question, hence the question mark diacritical mark. In Unicode, this is describe as an "o" with a horn and hook above. The tone is described as "low rising". Yes, so you may now make all the Pho-King and Pho-get about it jokes you want. Even Jay Leno posted (last night I think it was, yes I should be watching Letterman) a Mo Pho menu from some place in LA. :)
