Does anyone have good recommendations on unique places to buy gifts (birthdays, housewarming, etc.). Something in the $20-40 range, I'm tired of bringing wine to a party.

Oh, that is a great idea, thanks Monica, I just had lunch at their cafe! And I'm a member too, I should know better. Ferry Building, like that one too.

Max SF on Fillmore at Geary has some different home-y/gift-y things. I like Therapy Too on Valencia for more "fun" stuff. If your friends like Japanese you could probably find something in Japantown, like a lamp or something. Also, I drive by Friend on Gough at Hayes on my way to work every day. Looks cool though I've never been in.

Check out this slick product I developed. Almost everyone has stacks of Discs laying around their house and you can give them something they never seen before and looks cool!
www.theDiscHub.com and if you use the offer code "Yelp" you can save $2.

'Yum' on market has cool food items as alternatives to wine. I really need to go there more often myself. My review -

Thanks everyone, these are all great. I also was thinking that True Sake is another cool alternative. They're on Hayes near Laguna, I think.

For some of those funky or nerdy friends with strange ideas and tastes:
http://www.kidrobot.com/ - cool toy store with variously themed alternatives for those ever differentiating species of todays popculture representatives. My personal favorite is the Drinky Crow, go figure. The store itself is located on Haight St.
There is also this:

TV-Be-Gone, the gift that keeps on giving. Have you ever been in a restaurant and been annoyed by a running TV no one is watching? Perhaps you've been in a bar and couldn't keep a conversation going because of the beer commercials playing within view? Well finally you can fight back, turn off any TV instantly with TV-Be-Gone. Seriously, this product is great (albeit a bit bulky) and it's from a tiny SF based company. Be sure to check out their website, hilarious (
