The Washingtonian Magazine has published a list of their favorite super cheap eats. I think their monetary upper limit might be high for "dirt" cheap, but the restaurants look promising.

It would be great to see people try these restaurants out and have the Yelp DC weigh in on the good dirt cheap eats.

The magazine can be found at almost any mainstream supermarket. And no, I do not work for the magazine.

I'll def try some of their recommendations, but i tend to be wary of the washingtonion bc it's so unrealistic.

Was taking a look at this list and am surprised to see that a place like Zatinya would be considered a "cheap eat"

Gaaaaaaaaaaaah.  So much for trying to diet.  Blast you for pointing this out.  I now have a few dozen more restaurants added to my list of places to go. :S

the Washingtonian considers a cheap eat to be a meal for 2 with tax/tip coming in under $55. And so when you get to an offering like Zaytinya it says "well, just don't eat so many tapas"... and I say, "I could eay for under $55 anywhere using those guidelines. Jerks."

i'm glad you brought this article up aaron, and i'm happy to give my reviews for the places i've been and no doubt will go as a result of this list... but, uh, i'm going to veer off as my above paragraph suggested and add another disappointment with the Washingtonian's list: most things are in the area outside of DC. i've google mapped a few places outside DC proper and they are metro stops somewhat nearby but it miffs me more that the article talks about how great it is to have "cheap" ($12 entree) indian in South Riding and wow what great ambiance here... it's rather obvious to me that places OUTSIDE DC city limits can afford to charge less and spend more on decor because their rent is cheaper. but i could be wrong.
but really, what should i expect - it's from the washingtonian
/end tirade.

really, i look forward to hearing back fellow yelpers' opinions on these places. i think we could definitely come up with a awesome rival list for true cheap eats in dc. is it really true that i should venture farther into maryland and hit up hollywood cafe for dim sum?

Does Yelp have a collaborative list building feature? I know each user can make a list, but it would be great if we could all work on a master list like "best cheap eats" or "best places with outdoor dining"

Julie, I was struck by the same thought. I say we use this thread to start our own list of cheap eats IN DC!

Rocky, at the moment there is not a collaborative list feature on Yelp, although I think it's a great idea!
I love lists! http://www.yelp.com/us...
