I'll be in DC for a conference next week. What's there to check out in the Dupont Circle area? Interested in:

- good eats
- house music (deep and funky please)
- gay bars and clubs (fun but not too cruisy)
- any other must-sees

And, Amsterdam falafel in Adams morgan
Go to Malaysia Kopitiam for good food - on 19th and M.

As for gay bars:
Editors: Duplex Diner
If you are a preppy, professional gay man living in D.C. and you don't hang out at JR.'s, then chances are you hang out at the Duplex Diner. While there is much more attention paid to food at this 18th and U St. restaurant, the bar is always packed with the after-work crowd and those fresh from a workout at Results just down the street. Duplex has a flock of devoted regulars, who are more likely to ask one of the cute bartenders to shake up a cosmopolitan than to pop open a Bud.

Must see is the Portrait Gallery in Gallery Place. See the contest, the room with the big map, and the exhibit honoring the sesame st. animator. very cool!

Here are my recommendations for good eats in the area:
1) Al Tiramisu - Italian - love the homemade pasta
2) Johnny's Half Shell - Oyster Po'Boys and Shrimp & Grits
3) Bistrot du Coin - mussels, mussels, mussels.
4) Teaism - Scrambled Tofu and Chai

There are plenty of restaurants in the area, depending on what kind you want at the time.  For Chinese, there's City Lights of China.  You can find great Thai at Thaiphoon or Japanese (with American flair) at Raku.  There are great seafood places like Hank's Oyster Bar and Johnny's Half Shell.  For a cheap food on the go, Teaism or Julia's Empanadas are great food for your buck.

Hank's Oyster Bar is, without question, one of DC's best seafood restaurants.  Everything on the menu is this-minute fresh, and the wait staff is friendly and fast.  It's tiny though, so forget parties of more than four.  Get there before 7:00 pm or phone ahead to avoid a huge waiting line.  Be sure to try the mac 'n cheese side - absolutely otherworldly.

You're not going to find deep house like you hear in SF.  Plus we've lost our major clubs with the baseball stadium....  a moment of silence please.

I'd check out Cobalt and maybe even ask the bartenders there what's happening these days.

Musical (Evening) Delight!!

Option 1: 18th Street Lounge (its easy to miss--its right across from Lucky bar & right next to Five)
They have a sophisticated interior, an open-air deck in the back, and are owned by electronic act...Thievery Corporation.
Option 2: Five.

Comparison:  Of the 2 I like 18th Street better, although I did see the Giles Peterson who spins for the BBC at Five.
As far as I know, both bars are diverse, but not gay per-se.  There's no reason you can't hit both, except weekend covercharges.  I believe Firefly is across the street, you might check out what Yelpers have said about it as well.
