Um, can anyone recommend a  place to eat in Georgetown that's not too expensive and right off M Street?

I would suggest Japanese Steak House.  They have good deal for two.  The parking is very expensive.  I would try Rosslyn if you are out that way.

It's pretty much all overpriced.  What do you want from Georgetown?  How about Clyde's?  Or one of the Vietnamese places (I think one's good, one's bad, but I don't remember which is which).

The place that comes to my mind is Harmony Cafe. It's in a basement and all that, but it's not too expensive.

I'd put in a vote for Johnny Rockets, or the Philly Cheesesteak company ... but if burgers and fast food isn't your thing, I can't really think of anything else, mainly because, I don't hang out in G'town.

If seafood is your thing, check out the Sea Catch.  It's buried down one of the side streets off of M ... going towards the water.

Average meal for 2 ($ about 120 )

Menu:  Fresh sea food & raw bar

New Cafe (Italian w/ good ambiance)
Amma Vegetarian Kitchen (Indian)
Chadwick's (American-short walk down wisconsin to k)
La Madeline (kinda Corner Bakery-style)

I'd recommend Vietnam Georgetown right by the 4 Seasons Hotel. They have garden seating which is nice if it's not too hot out. Small an intimate but can get sooo crowded on weekend nights.

Boy! I wish I was living in DC again to be 20's then I would really enjoy it.  I missed the Crystal City Underground. It was one of the best place to party 20 years ago, second to GT.  Then on M Street there are things to do.

Cafe Tu-Oh-Tu. It's right at the beginning of M Street, like two doors down from the Four Seasons. That reminds me, I ought to write a review. It's a cafe with a lot of sandwich/salad/etc fare, but with a sort of european leaning (I'm pretty sure the owners + all the workers are european). I had a fantastic mediterranean salad and some delish hummus and pita there for lunch one day. Other friends and co-workers are basically obsessed with it, so I'm pretty sure it's not just me. I spent about $7 for the two things above.

Otherwise, I'm not sure of your price range of "not too expensive," but.... I loved Chez Mama-San, that's firmly in the $10+ entree range. But such a nice space - the waterfront side of 33rd off M.

My 2 cents on others' recommendations - I'd avoid chains, although I do enjoy La Madeline for TONS of food at a reasonable price (all of it so not good for you!). I liked Vietnam Georgetown and Miss Saigon though not enough to unequivocally tell you to go there. Unless you NEED garden rolls, like me.

Let us know where you go!
